As a 24-year-old fitness enthusiast who has recently discovered the joy of pedalling around my hometown, I feel like I’ve unlocked a new level in the game of life. Not only is cycling an excellent way to stay fit, but it’s also a fantastic method to explore the world. But where do you start? Well, buckle up (or should I say strap on your helmet?), because we’re about to embark on a journey through some of the best cycling routes for fitness enthusiasts around the world.
For those who love an adrenaline rush as much as they love their avocado toast (yes, that’s me), The Death Road in Bolivia is one route that needs to be on your bucket list. Now, don’t let the name scare you off; this route is more thrilling than deadly. It offers breathtaking views and challenging terrains that will make your heart race faster than my last Tinder date.
Next stop: Down Under! As an Aussie myself, I couldn’t possibly overlook our very own Great Ocean Road. This scenic route stretches over 243 kilometres along Australia’s southeastern coast. It offers panoramic ocean views and sightings of native wildlife – kangaroos included! Just remember to lather up with sunscreen; nothing ruins a good ride like a sunburn worse than British tourists at Bondi Beach.
If you fancy sipping some wine after burning calories (because balance is key), then Route des Grand Crus in France should be your go-to destination. This picturesque trail winds through lush vineyards and charming French villages. I mean, who wouldn’t want to pedal their way through a real-life postcard? Just remember to cycle responsibly!
For those who prefer sheep to people (we’ve all been there), the Otago Central Rail Trail in New Zealand is the perfect escape. This 150-kilometre trail offers diverse landscapes, from rugged mountains to rolling green pastures. Plus, it’s flat and easy-going – ideal for beginners or anyone who’s had one too many pies during lockdown.
If you’re after a cultural immersion with your fitness routine, The Shimanami Kaido in Japan is a must-try. This 70-kilometre route connects Japan’s main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku, passing over six small islands in the Seto Inland Sea. It’s like playing real-life Mario Kart, minus the blue shells and banana peels.
Last but not least is La Farola in Cuba. This route takes you through nine tunnels carved into the mountainside and along coastal cliffs that will have your Instagram followers green with envy. Be prepared for some serious uphill cycling though; this isn’t for the faint-hearted or those whose idea of exercise is lifting a mojito.
In summary (because we don’t do conclusions here), each of these cycling routes offers its own unique blend of adventure, culture and breathtaking scenery that will make every sweaty kilometre worth it. So whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a casual cyclist looking for your next holiday destination (post-COVID restrictions permitting), there’s a pedalling paradise waiting for you somewhere on this beautiful planet.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go and dust off my bike for the next adventure. Or maybe I’ll just stay in bed and dream about it. After all, who said you can’t have your cake and eat it too?
