As a self-proclaimed gym bunny who has done more burpees than I’d care to admit, I’ve always found solace in the four walls of my local fitness centre. But recently, I’ve discovered something that has entirely revolutionised my approach to keeping fit – outdoor fitness. And no, I’m not just talking about a brisk walk around the block or a casual bike ride through the park. I mean really immersing myself in Mother Nature’s gymnasium.
The fusion of travel and fitness is nothing short of magical. Not only do you get to experience some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes but you also have the opportunity to challenge your body in new and exciting ways. It’s like killing two birds with one stone – or should I say squashing two bugs with one shoe? (Don’t worry, no actual bugs were harmed in the writing of this article).
First on our list is none other than the Swiss Alps. This majestic mountain range offers an array of outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, skiing and even paragliding for those adrenaline junkies among us. The beauty here is that every workout is customisable; whether you’re a beginner looking for gentle trails or an advanced athlete seeking steep inclines for high intensity interval training (HIIT), there’s something for everyone.
Next, we jet off to sunny Australia. Bondi Beach is not just a surfer’s paradise; it’s also a fitness enthusiast’s dream. The famous Bondi to Coogee coastal walk offers stunning views and a great workout. For something more structured, check out the outdoor gym at Bondi Park or join one of the many beach boot camps.
Stanley Park in Vancouver is another must-visit destination for outdoor fitness lovers. With over 400 hectares of natural west coast rainforest, there are endless trails for running or cycling. If you’re like me and enjoy pretending you’re part of a romantic movie montage when you exercise (just me?), then the seawall path with its panoramic ocean views will be right up your alley.
Finally, we head to Cape Town for our last stop – Table Mountain. This flat-topped mountain offers challenging hiking trails that lead to an unbeatable view of the city and coastline below. Plus, if you fancy turning your workout into a full-on adventure, there’s abseiling available too.
We all know that staying active is vital for our physical and mental health but let’s not forget about the health of our planet either. When exploring these beautiful destinations, remember to respect nature by sticking to marked trails and disposing of any rubbish properly.
In my experience, nothing beats combining travel with fitness. It’s an incredible way to stay healthy while experiencing new cultures and landscapes. So next time you’re planning a trip, why not consider one of these outdoor fitness destinations? You might just find that the world is the best gym there is.
