Hey there, fellow wanderlusters and fitness enthusiasts! Sophie here, your 24-year-old guide to surviving the Gen Z world. Today, we’re going to talk about two of my favourite things: travel and workouts. Now you’re probably thinking, “Sophie, I can barely fit my 7 pairs of shoes into my suitcase. How on earth am I supposed to pack a dumbbell too?” Well, don’t worry your trendy little head because today’s article is all about travel workouts that require no equipment whatsoever.
Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let’s address the elephant in the room. Why should you workout while travelling? Isn’t vacation time meant for relaxation and overindulgence? Well yes, but if you’re anything like me who can’t resist an extra serving of gelato (or three) while exploring Italy or some good old fish and chips in Australia, then squeezing in a workout might be just what you need to balance out those delicious indulgences.
Now onto the fun part – bodyweight exercises! These are exercises that use your own body weight as resistance. The beauty of these bad boys is that they can be done anywhere – from hotel rooms to airport lounges – without any equipment needed. Plus, they target multiple muscle groups at once which means more calories burnt (read: more room for holiday treats).
A classic exercise that targets your chest, shoulders and triceps. If standard push-ups are too challenging at first (trust me I’ve been there), start with knee push-ups or wall push-ups until you build up strength.
A staple in any workout routine, squats target your quads, hamstrings and glutes. For an added challenge, try jump squats to get your heart rate up.
My love-hate relationship with planks is real but there’s no denying their effectiveness in working the core. Remember to keep your body straight and engage your abs throughout the exercise.
The key to staying fit while travelling is consistency. Try to squeeze in a quick 20-minute workout first thing in the morning before you start your day of exploring. Trust me, it’s much easier than trying to muster up the energy after a day of sightseeing.
I know what you’re thinking: “Sophie, I’m on holiday! Why would I want to workout?” Well, think about how much more rewarding that sunset cocktail will be knowing you’ve earned it with a killer workout earlier on. Plus, regular exercise can help reduce travel stress and jet lag – bonus!
Nope! Not yet! Because we never really conclude here at Illusions of Wisdom, do we? Instead let’s continue this journey together as we navigate through life one squat at a time (preferably not while holding a gelato). So go ahead and pack those extra shoes because who needs dumbbells when you’ve got bodyweight exercises?
Until next time,
Sophie x
